3G Phone Suppliers

Australia enjoys 100% 3G coverage, thanks to its main 3G phone suppliers whose networks extend to all major cities. Since 2003, several 3G phone suppliers have opened in the country, all of them offering a full range of 3G services. The four leading 3G phone suppliers are Optus, Telstra, Vodafone, and 3.

Optus 3G

Optus is one of the most popular 3G phone suppliers, with a subscribership of over 7 million as of 2008 and speeds of up to 1500 Mbps. The company joined the other 3G phone suppliers in 2004, a joint project with its competitor Vodafone. It now offers 3G services to 96% of the population, making it one of the leading 3G phone suppliers in terms of coverage.

Telstra 3G

Formerly government-owned, Telstra is the biggest telecom provider in Australia and one of the pioneer 3G phone suppliers. It owns much of the existing 3G infrastructure, allowing it to regulate competing 3G phone suppliers (except Optus and Vodafone, who have their own networks). It has over 10 million subscribers, of which 3.3 million are subscribed to 3G.

Vodafone 3G

Vodafone joined the market late in 2004-a bit later than other 3G phone suppliers-but is one of the fastest growing 3G phone suppliers in the country. A UK-based company, it offers more international access than other 3G phone suppliers, making it especially popular among frequent travelers. However, unlike most 3G phone suppliers in the country, its service is still limited to postpaid users.

Three 3G

Although fairly new in Australia, 3 beat the other 3G phone suppliers to offer the country's first 3G service in 2003. Its first years were rough, however: many subscribers complained of poor performance and later switched to other 3G phone suppliers. But it has greatly improved over the years, and continues to add new features that match those of its competitors.
