TELSTRA is claiming that once Australians try mobile phone TV, they take to it with great relish - with the result that they are among the world's heaviest users of the service.

Telstra's director for brand, advertising, media and sponsorship, Bill Obermeier, recently told a media briefing: "Based on the last data I saw, the percentage of customers on Telstra's NextG network subscribing to our live mobile pay-TV service, Foxtel by Mobile, is one of the largest per capita usage of any similar subscription mobile pay-TV service in the world."

Although Telstra won't reveal exact figures on the number of downloads and streams, its most recent research shows that when customers switch from standard 3G phones to its faster NextG network, they download and listen to three times as much music, watch more than seven times as many video streams and make 11 times more video calls.

Fox8, the Comedy Channel and Disney Channel were the most watched channels, the research found. Mr Obermeier added that once people realised they could watch TV, they rapidly adopted it.

Hutchison 3 said Italy probably had the highest viewing of TV on mobile phones but that Australia was not far behind.

Hutchison added that live events, such as cricket and Big Brother, were the most popular.

Vodafone was unable to say how Australia compared to other countries when it came to the adoption of mobile TV.

"We can confirm that alongside music, mobile TV is one of the most popular services on Vodafone live! with 3G in Australia," a spokesman said.
