3G Phone Buyer's Guide
22 October 2008
This 3G phone buyer's guide details some of the concerns you should keep in mind when choosing a 3G phone. There are many differences between the best 3G phone for business 3G usage and personal 3G usage, so be sure to choose wisely based on your needs rather than just choosing based on price range or brand.
What will you be using your 3G phone for?
Aside from voice calls and SMS, a 3G phone can also allow for Web access and downloads of useful programs or entertainment. Not all of the benefits of a 3G phone are useful to every user. Decide whether your focus is business 3G use, entertainment 3G use, Web browsing 3G use or whether you just want a basic 3G phone.
Business 3G
A business 3G phone will need to be capable of sending and receiving emails quickly and conveniently. This usually means using a smartphone with a QWERTY keypad or similarly easy-to-use interface.
Entertainment 3G
For an entertainment-based 3G phone, make sure it can stream content smoothly and look for bigger screens with good speakers and a dedicated entertainment interface. The average 3G phone won't usually be very good for entertainment, so you may need to spend more.
Web browsing 3G
The best kind of 3G phone for Web browsing is often one with a touch screen, but not all touch screen 3G phones are as good as the iPhone. Try to browse the Web on a 3G phone model you are considering before purchase, as the best interface varies from person to person.
General 3G
If you have no particular needs of your 3G phone other than taking and making voice calls, you will want to find a cheaper generalist 3G phone. A 3G phone that comes as part of a contract may allow you to get a higher quality 3G phone, so consider using a capped plan instead of using pre-paid credit.
