Is your 3G phone receiving network coverage?

2 July 2008

Many Australians have a 3G phone. But what is the 3G phone network coverage like? Some areas have no problems at all, reporting excellent network coverage, while others complain about no coverage or frequent dropouts, which results in the 3G phone roaming to GSM and GRPS coverage.

Most carriers have 3G network coverage in Australia. A 3G phone with Telstra has a better chance of picking up 3G networks as Telstra provides the largest 3G network coverage, with their network extending to major cities and some regional areas.

Other carriers are gradually expanding their 3G networks so a 3G phone in a rural can use their signal. Hobart and Darwin don't receive 3G networks. Most carriers are working on expanding their 3G network coverage.

If you're looking at getting a 3G phone, be sure to check with your carrier about the 3G network coverage in your area and find out where it extends to.
